Sometimes when I'm burned out the only thing that makes me feel better is doing historical research.
Right now I'm looking at the way people from the UK participated in the building of the Göta Canal. It was drawn up by Thomas Telford, who also sent lots of workmen to the project. (Copy)

I got excited for a moment seeing that one Swedish person was 'transported' to Delaware in the 1770s, before realising it doesn't mean the same criminal thing as it would in English.

Today I also learned that Maxim guns had a Swedish competitor in the Palmcrantz machine gun for a while. The Nordenfelt company which made them also sold submarines, and in the 1880s sold them to both Greece and Turkey!

Eventually they merged with Maxim, and Nordenfelt was pushed out by the even more ruthless Basil Zaharoff.
